How to use PAN Card Photo Resizer
- Choose whether you are applying through NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL. Both use the same image sizes.
- Add your photograph. It is cropped square and compressed to the size the portal takes.
- Photograph your signature inside the box on the form, then add it. The paper around it is trimmed off.
- Download both and upload them at the two separate fields on Form 49A.
What the PAN application asks for
Form 49A, filed through NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL, wants a recent colour passport-style photograph and your signature inside the box provided. Both go up as JPEG files under the portal's size cap, and the signature must be the same one you will use on the form itself.
Both portals take the same image sizes, so the NSDL and UTIITSL presets match. Form 49AA, for foreign citizens, has the same image requirements as 49A.
Getting it accepted first time
- Sign inside the box. Your signature must not run over the edges of the printed box on the form. Sign a blank box, photograph it, and let the tool crop to the ink.
- Use black ink. The portal wants a clear dark signature on white. The tool turns it grey, which is what reproduces best.
- Do not sign across the photograph. The photo and the signature are separate uploads, and a signature over the face is a common rejection.
- Keep the photo recent and plain. Light background, full face, no cap or sunglasses.
A worked example
Choose the NSDL preset, add a phone photo and a photograph of your signed box. The photograph is cropped square and compressed to the size the portal takes. The signature is trimmed to the ink, turned grey, redrawn smaller and compressed to a similar size. Download both and upload them at the two separate fields on the form.
Limits worth knowing
- Portal requirements change. Every box here can be edited, so if the site you are filing on states different numbers, type those in.
- The tool does not check your appearance against the rules, and it does not fill in the form.
- Keep your originals. If the application comes back asking for a better photograph, you will want the full-resolution file.
Frequently asked questions
What does a PAN application need?
A recent colour passport-style photograph and your signature, both as JPEG files under the portal cap. The signature must be the same one you use on the form, and it must stay inside the printed box.
Is NSDL different from UTIITSL?
Not for the images. Both take the same photo and signature sizes, which is why the two presets here match. The forms and fees differ a little, but what you upload does not.
My signature runs outside the box. Does that matter?
Yes, it is a common reason for rejection. Sign inside a blank box the same size as the one on the form, photograph that, and let the tool crop to the ink.
Can I sign across the photograph?
No. The photo and the signature are two separate uploads, and a signature written over the face will get your application returned.
What about Form 49AA for foreign citizens?
Same image requirements as Form 49A, and there is a preset for it. The supporting documents differ, but the photo and signature do not.
