How to use Hindi Typing

  1. Type Hindi words the way they sound, in English letters: "namaste", "dhanyavaad", "kaise ho".
  2. Watch the Devanagari appear beside what you type. Double a vowel to make it long, so "mera" gives मेर and "meraa" gives मेरा.
  3. Use capitals for the retroflex sounds. Small t is त but capital T is ट.
  4. Press Copy to take the Hindi text into any form, document or message.

How to type

Spell the word the way it sounds and the Devanagari appears as you go. namaste becomes नमस्ते, dhanyavaad becomes धन्यवाद. Capital letters are not decoration. They pick the retroflex and long forms, so t is त but T is ट.

One rule explains most surprises: a long vowel is the letter doubled. mera gives मेर, but meraa gives मेरा. hindi gives हिंदि, hindii gives हिंदी.

The nasal, handled for you

In Hindi an n or m before a consonant of the same group is written as the anusvara. The tool does that for you, so anguur gives अंगूर and rang gives रंग. But dhanyavaad keeps the न् and gives धन्यवाद, because य is not in that group. Where you want the anusvara and did not get it, type M.

Limits worth knowing

  • There is no dictionary behind this. It cannot know you meant भारत rather than भरत, so type bhaarat and it will.
  • A capital M or H at the start of a word is treated as ordinary capitalisation, so Mera and Hindi behave as you would expect.
  • A full stop becomes a danda (।) only at the end of a sentence, so decimals like 12.5 stay intact. You can switch that off if you would rather keep full stops.
  • The result is ordinary Unicode text. Paste it into any form, document or message and it will show up wherever Devanagari is supported.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type long vowels and retroflex letters?

Double the vowel for the long form, so aa gives आ, ii gives ई and uu gives ऊ. Capitals give the retroflex consonants: T is ट, D is ड, N is ण. The full key map is on this page.

Why does my word come out slightly wrong?

Because this converts exactly what you type, with no dictionary behind it. So "bharat" gives भरत and "bhaarat" gives भारत. Once you get used to doubling long vowels, most words follow.

Does it know when to use the anusvara?

Yes, for the common cases. An n or m before a consonant of the same group becomes ं on its own, so "anguur" gives अंगूर. Where you want ं and did not get it, type M.

Can I use this text anywhere?

Yes. The output is ordinary Unicode Devanagari, the same as any Hindi keyboard gives. Paste it into a government form, a Word file, WhatsApp or an email.

Do I need to install a Hindi keyboard?

No. Nothing to install and no system settings to change. It works the same on a phone as on a laptop.
